Compact Open baffle speakers that definitely will win box speakers !

Open baffles have been known for its amazingly rich sound

I have been looking around for a while to buy a open baffle pair. Due to the lack of availability in market, i decided to make one and finally ended with this.

I made use of a pair of custom designed 2.75 inch speakers, that came with my 5.1 home theatre speakers.

It can produce a decent mid bass till 100 hz.

I never know any detail about its T/S parameters.

But one thing i can predict is, its high sensitivity. So, i decided to go with it.

For the baffle, i made use of fluted/corrugated fibreboard (instead of MDF).

The design

Open baffle designs usually have wide baffles.

But, i wanted to go for a compact baffle.

I was just researching for a while and finally settled with a H-frame design.

This is how i calculated the sides of the baffle

The lower cutoff frequency i chose for the baffle is 120 hz, since my speakers can do well only around that frequency at the lower extreme.

I used (λ/32) wavelength as baffle side dimensions. It looks like  this. (Really no big mathematics)

So, the height is chosen as (λ/16) wavelength.

The (λ/32) wavelength for 120 hz comes around 343/120 = 0.089 metres (3.5 inches).

No more complicated calculations for the design.

And the transient response looks like this

The mid bass level is decent and the ambience is amazing (one of the most prominent characteristics of open baffles).

They sound so lively and pleasing.

I can listen to it at higher spl for long time without hearing fatique.
Just got excited over how these open baffle pair handles music all alone.
